Edinburgh TV Festival Special
Leon Wilson, Jake Kanter, Rebecca Cooney, Boyd Hilton, Faraz Osman and more...
The Media Club’s spent the last four days at the Edinburgh TV Festival and there’s been quite a few barbs thrown, including Channel 4's Louisa Compton called Netflix a "TV tourist" after the success of Adolescence, saying that “We are the proud parents of Adolescence. It wouldn’t have happened without Channel 4 and other PSBs”. Mona Qureshi, Netflix UK's director of scripted series replied "I don’t think I’m a tourist — I’ve been around."
The changing nature of television was touched on in most sessions, with MacTaggart speaker James Harding stating “If you’re in the entertainment business… it feels like The Last of Us: we’re just trying to survive as the fungus of new things eats us alive.”
On today’s podcast you can hear from Broadcast’s Rebecca Cooney and Heather Fallon, whilst Editor Chris Curtis had to miss the festival due to a late breaking story - his achilles tendon! We also catch-up with Deadline’s Jake Kanter who’s not sure whether the Festival engaged with the coming right wing storm, and Bauer’s Boyd Hilton who was unsettled by a poo in a pool.
I also spoke to some indie bosses, the CEO of Shine and Zeppotron, Leon Wilson and the Creative Director at local indie Studio Something, Jordan Laird. From Leon we heard about season two of Lost One Laughing and Jordan talked about the opportunities for smaller production companies.
Plus in the Media Quiz we’re talking new commissions, but can our guests work out which we’ve made up.
