ITV's The Hack, Streamer Levies and World Service Cuts
Tara Conlan and Julia Raeside join Matt Deegan
Journalist Tara Conlan joins us on the sofa after hot-footing it from the Channel 4/RTS event where Alex Mahon talked about the challenges of broadcasting to Gen Z. In the speech she mentioned creating a public service LLM, something Faraz Osman suggested on our show in 2023. Keep up telly bosses!
Tara gives us the goss about the Netflix up-fronts-style event where they announced their new launches. But they aren’t the only ones producing new material, so we discuss whether ITV’s The Hack will resonate with audiences.
We also look at the BBC World Service cuts and whether putting a levy on streamer’s UK revenues could support UK drama, or the BBC licence fee.
Also on the sofa, journalist Julia Raeside, on the day that the BBC published it’s report on Russell Brand, tells us about her new novel that takes a look at the darker side of the comedy world. We also explore how journalists are taking to Substack and a new video project she’s launched on the platform called FFS.
