Ofcom Wants YouTube to Host Public Service Media
Ofcom's Cristina Nicolotti Squires Joins Matt Deegan
This morning, Ofcom released a report looking at the future of public media. The big headline is that they think urgent steps need to be taken to ensure that public service media content is easy to find and discover on third-party platforms - including YouTube.
Their other main points include:
Stable and adequate funding to sustain a broad range of PSM content, including news and children’s
Urgent clarity on how TV will be distributed in the future
Public service media firms must forge ambitious strategic partnerships at scale
Broadcasters and online platforms must invest in media literacy
Streamlined regulation to strip away any outdated and unnecessary restrictions
In a Media Club special, I caught up with the Group Director for Broadcasting and Media at Ofcom, Cristina Nicolotti Squires, to talk more about the report and why Ofcom are taking action now.
We’re taking a little summer break now, but we’re back at the end of August with an episode from the Edinburgh TV Festival. If you’re there, do come and say Hi! Meanwhile, it would be great if you could fill in our survey about the show. We’re putting everyone who takes part into a draw to win a £50 John Lewis voucher.
