YouTube came to Edinburgh to tell television it isn’t the villain. Television listened politely, then spent three days talking about mergers.
We’re at the EICC for the final Edinburgh TV Festival before it decamps to Manchester, and the mood is somewhere between a wake and a job fair. TV critic Scott Bryan and Biscuit Jim’s Geoff Jein unpack Pedro Pina’s MacTaggart, in which the YouTube EMEA boss argued that forced prominence for public service media would “impair the public interest” and put creators’ livelihoods at risk. Handy, given the platform’s algorithm is the one thing in this industry nobody in the room can influence.
Fenton Bailey of World of Wonder gives us the metaphor of the festival, and possibly of the decade:
“These massive media players are lip syncing for their lifeboat. No innovation, it’s all consolidation.”
Also on the show: Nicola Shindler on why the key to drama isn’t the kitchen island, Dino Sofos of Persephonica on Amol Rajan’s jump to YouTube and what happens when the BBC lets your podcast go commercial, Lucas Green on running Banijay’s newly enlarged train set, and Twofour’s David Clews on Educating Yorkshire’s return and getting Gary Lineker into a yellow box.
Plus: Matt has written a rather long document about what to do with the BBC, and asked Deadline’s Jake Kanter to tell him why it’s wrong. And in the Audio Network Media Quiz, it’s Commission Impossible, where the only thing harder than getting a show away is telling the real announcements from the fake ones. Broadcast’s Chris Curtis and top producer Rina Dayalji have a go.
